The Diggstown Strategy
From the TBTL 101 on MyNorthwest.com:
This is our official plan for ending an interview that is going horribly wrong. It is based on the 1992 James Woods film, Diggstown. Giving a big thumbs down is a repeated plot device in the film, so when we wondered how to communicate that we were going to end an interview prematurely, Jen suggested we use "the diggstown thumbsdown". The strategey is simple; Jen will cue Sean for the "TBTL Breaking News Sounder" and then interrupt the show with the announcement that we must go immediately to a traffic report.

AWESOME
From the FT.com
The trustee in charge of recovering assets from Bernie Madoff’s fraudulent investment scheme expects to reach financial settlements over the coming weeks with a handful of investors who reaped profits.
At a press conference on Thursday, Irving Picard, the court-appointed trustee, said he expected “significant settlements” in the near future, although he declined to say whether he was negotiating with parties against whom he has already filed suit, or as yet unnamed beneficiaries of Mr Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

Malcome Gladwell book "blink"
to be made into a movie
From the CBC:
Hollywood heavyweight Al Pacino is being touted for a lead role in a movie inspired by Canadian writer Malcolm Gladwell's non-fiction bestseller Blink.
Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan, whose credits include Traffic and Syriana, will write and direct the film, according to industry reports from the Cannes Film Festival.
The plot revolves around an older man attempting to reconnect with his estranged son — a twentysomething drifter who displays the snap judgment decision-making ability Gladwell explores in his book.
An actor has yet to be cast as the son. However, producers are eying a fall start to the production.

MARTIN SCORSESE'S SINATRA PROJECT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
AWESOME
From a item in Rotten Tomatoes:
A year ago this week, the Weekly Ketchup reported Nancy Sinatra's negotiations with Universal Pictures on a biopic of her father, crooner and actor Frank Sinatra, that she hoped Martin Scorsese would direct. This week, the project was finally officially announced by Universal Pictures, with Scorsese indeed attached to direct. Titled Sinatra, the script will be written by Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams, All of Me), whose last theatrical release was way back in 1992 with Sneakers. Although no actor is as yet officially signed to star as Frank Sinatra, one of the producers acknowledged that the top contender is indeed Leonardo DiCaprio, who has obviously emerged as Scorsese's favorite actor in recent years, starring in Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and the upcoming Shutter Island. However, there is also a rumor that Universal is hot on the idea of Johnny Depp possibly starring as Sinatra, following their happiness with his performance in Public Enemies. There are many different elements of Frank Sinatra's life that seem to be movie-friendly, including his status as one of the most successful singers of the 20th century, his career as an actor, his friends in the Rat Pack, his many romantic conquests, his friendship with J.F.K. and the alleged ties to the mafia. Producer Cathy Schulman said about the scope of the movie that it will be an "unconventional biopic that will touch on all phases of Sinatra's life."

AWESOME
There seems to be more than a few complaints about JJ Abrams‘ use of the Beastie Boys‘ track Sabotage in the new Star Trek film. But it isn’t at all random, and not just inserted twenith centry pop culture. First off, the sequence in question is when 13-year-old James T Kirk steals his step-father’s antique convertable and drives it off a cliff.
I must give screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci credit on this one. I believe this scene to be a multi-layed metaphor, and the choice of music might be a call back to William Shatner, who played the James T Kirk in the original series.

Yankee: NOT AWESOME
Mariners: AWSOME
From A Blog Post:
Ticket prices at the new Yankee Stadium are so high that if a New Yorker wants to watch a Mariners/Yankees game from the best seats, it would be a lot cheaper to fly to Seattle, stay in a nice hotel, eat fancy dinners, and see two games.
Option 1: Two tickets to Tuesday night, June 30, Mariners at Yanks, cost for just the tickets, $5,000.
Option 2: Two round-trip airline tickets to Seattle, Friday, Aug. 14, return Sunday the 16th, rental car for three days, two-night double occupancy stay in four-star hotel, two top tickets to both the Saturday and Sunday Yanks-Mariners games, two best-restaurant-in-town dinners for two. Total cost, $2,800. Plus-frequent flyer miles.

Reporting a death in Seattle
Back on May 5, the West Seattle Blog reported on a death at the Roxbury Safeway, or, more specifically, a dead body at the Safeway, a woman who’d died elsewhere and was brought to the store by two men looking for a phone to report the death.
Reading this story it struck me that if I somehow came across someone who died, I’d have no idea whom to call. I’ve never been in the company of someone who’d passed away without also being in the company of someone who knew what to do. It dawned on me that I might not be the only one who was at a loss as to how to handle a death, so I turned to the Seattle Police Department for answers.

From The AP:
An American journalist imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran for four months was freed Monday and reunited with her smiling, tearful parents _ a move that clears a major obstacle to President Barack Obama's attempts at dialogue with the top U.S. adversary in the Middle East. The United States had said the charges against Roxana Saberi, a 32-year-old dual Iranian-American citizen, were baseless and repeatedly demanded her release.
Hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could also win some domestic political points a month before he faces a re-election challenge from reformers who seek to ease Iran's bitter rivalry with the United States.

TBTL a Few Weeks Ago.
